Cosmetic Colors

In cosmetics, color is the most important aspect. Colors range from the darkest black to the brightest white. But with all of these color additives comes strict requirements. To receive approval under U.S. law, color additives are subject to a stern system. When cosmetic products are imported into the country, one of the most common reasons for detaining the product is color additive violations. If your product contains color additives, you must adhere to the following requirements:

  • Approval from the FDA
  • Certification by the FDA (does not apply to every product)
  • Identity and Specifications stated in the Code of Federal Regulations
  • Use and Restrictions

Each color additive must also be specifically approved for its intended use. When making cosmetics for around the eye, you may only use color additives that specifically permit use around the eye. This same concept also applies to externally applied cosmetics and injections. Novelty make-up is subject to the same rules and regulations as all other cosmetics.
