Cosmetic Product Ingredient Filings

Cosmetics are substances used to enhance or protect the appearance or odor of the body. Their use is widespread, especially among women in Western countries. The manufacture of cosmetics is currently dominated by a small number of multinational corporations that originated in the early 20th century, but the distribution and sale of cosmetics is spread among a wide range of different businesses. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which regulates cosmetics in the United States defines cosmetics as: "intended to be applied to the human body for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance without affecting the body's structure or functions." This broad definition includes, as well, any material intended for use as a component of a cosmetic product.

While there is assurance from the largest cosmetic companies that their various ingredients are safe to use, there is a growing preference for cosmetics that are without any "synthetic" ingredients, especially those derived from petroleum. Once a niche market, certified organic products are becoming more mainstream. New cosmetics using organogels that are water free, preservative free and surfactant free have recently been developed that contain natural products. Cosmetics that use an organogel base are suitable for use by persons with sensitive skin.

For women, it is extremely important to be aware of what ingredients are in their different make-up products and what is touching their skin. Cosmetic companies need to note every ingredient in their products, and, if there is a harmful ingredient, need to adjust accordingly. In August of 2005, Carrington Labs was sent a warning letter stating that during an analytical testing, microorganisms were found in two lots of mouthwash. Do not let this happen to your company; know what can and can’t be used in cosmetics so your company does not fall into this common trap.
