Beijing has announced plans to ban people convicted of food safety crimes from investing in and operating related businesses for the rest of their lives.
According to the new draft amendment to Beijing Food Safety regulations, companies whose lack of food safety controls results in a crisis will be ordered to cease operation and pay fines ranging from RMB 5,000 to 100,000 ($800 – $16,000 appx). Companies who cause a severe food safety issue will also have their permits and business licenses revoked.
Multiple levels of punishments are discussed in the regulation. The legal representative or the person in charge of the company in question will be prohibited from investing in the food industry or food production activities for five years from the enactment of the conviction. The person who will be held criminally responsible for the food safety crimes will be forbidden to invest in the food industry or food production activities for their lifetime.
These rules reflect China’s efforts to improve regulation of the industry after a string of negative incidents related to food safety, many of them making national headlines in the United States and abroad. Beijing’s government is seeking the public’s opinion until April 25.
