Today, the White House confirmed the Trump administration’s intent to impose tariffs and other restrictions on Chinese goods with “industrially significant technology.” The 25% tariff would be on top of any existing tariffs on those imports.
As we reported in April, the list of products imported from China to the US may include medicaments, vaccines, immunological products and organic chemicals used by the pharmaceutical industry. A full list of impacted products is expected to be announced by June 15. The White House noted that new tariffs would be implemented “shortly thereafter.” affiliated Customs attorney, Roy León, explains, “We cannot predict with certainty the exact date new tariffs would be implemented by the U.S. government. However, we can say that the implementation date would be sooner than later, since the notice and comment period, having already elapsed, regarding the determination of the referenced tariffs before the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative in Docket No. USTR-2018-0005 as of May 22, 2018.”
Announcements about additional sanctions focused on investment restrictions and export controls are expected by the end of the month.
We continue to follow this story and will report as lists are finalized, and government action moves forward. Our affiliated attorneys, who practice in customs and international trade law, will be prepared to evaluate the impact of these and future trade sanctions.
