As Orange Juice speculation drives juice futures all over the map and consumers brace for spending more on Orange Juice than gasoline per gallon, one must ask, “How is Big Juice assuaging the masses with all of this concern over orange juice?” As any cultural connoisseur would do we look to social media, notably Facebook, for our answer. We have a food safety system designed to ensure the safety of our products. The Environmental Protection Agency stated that consumption of orange juice at the low levels that have been reported does not raise safety concerns. For Tropicana Pure Premium (not-from-concentrate juice), we made an unrelated decision some months ago to transition to 100 percent Florida orange juice. This transition to production for Tropicana Pure Premium is well under way and will be completed by the end of the month. As the largest buyer of Florida oranges, this is a minor supply chain change for our Tropicana Pure Premium product.

We never import our orange juice. That’s a promise no other national brand can make.
It remains to be seen how successful these efforts will be. Will consumers transfer their prime juice loyalty to apple or grape juice? Most consumers probably aren’t aware that the same chemical residue from the OJ scare is permitted by the EPA at substantially higher levels in these alternative juice types. Will consumers remain faithful to their favorite breakfast drink or will they select other juice varieties from the same brands they’ve familiar with?
